MIB AG purchased the property on Turmstrasse 29 in December 2010. Hertie designed the existing building as a typical department store with contemporary architecture dating from the late 1950s. It opened in 1961 and continued operating until 2009.
The building was stripped down to its supporting structure and completely rebuilt as part of the renewal of the traditional retail site. The high-quality upgrading work and the introduction of the façade design penned by the Berlin architect Thomas Müller was completed in a building time of 14 months. The building now has a modern shell; the large façade offset in two colours above the transparent retail façade visually underlines the different usage on the different floors.
The retail space in the basement, on the ground and first floors opened on 25 April 2013. A large C&A store and a RENO family shoe shop provide the textile and shoe expertise at the site. With a “dm” drugstore, the “go asia” Asian supermarket as the full-range trader and the 4.0 chemist’s store, Turmstrasse 29 provides a comprehensive range of goods that people need on a daily basis. A baker’s and coffee shop provides an attractive destination for the many passers-by. It has gained an excellent reputation as a centre for essential supplies. Its location right next to the underground station and the bus stop in front of the building, which forms a meeting point for many bus lines, support this function. This is rounded off by a service and advisory centre for the AOK health insurance scheme.
Jopp & Jopp AG has set up a fitness studio for women on the second floor and is the market leader in the city. The services on the 2nd floor are supplemented by the Moadent dental clinic, which offers eight treatment rooms, an orthodontic surgery centre and in-house dental laboratory services at space measuring 600 square metres. There are 48 loft apartments with units measuring between 40 and 85 square metres on the two top floors. Tenants have the opportunity of taking their bikes into their flats in a separate lift. The apartments are bright with patios and balconies overlooking the courtyard and have a great view.
The building’s perfect location within the urban structure encourages this idea. Tenants can reach many important districts in Berlin easily from Turmstrasse 29. The underground station on the U9 line is an alternative to using your bike. It is also easy to catch the buses to Tegel Airport or the central railway station and use the 101, 123, 245, M27 and 187 bus routes. There are parking spaces for cars in the car park at the rear of the plot. All the apartments are finished and exclusively equipped as if it was a new building.
Project development starts with a good idea – and a good sense of intuition. We check both thoroughly to ensure they are reliable.
